Dearest Roman, of course I love you darling- I was however wondering, how *do* you keep from borrowing too deeply from the aesthetics of your idols? -sorry if that’s a terribly boorish thing to answer, but it occurred to me the other day that you rather seem to walk the line between tribute and theft with such certain, elegant concision. Regards, E.
Dear E, I think honesty & keeping your idols varied is the decent way. I remember some 1-2 years ago when my influences were very limited I’d show my stuff to people and they would instantly say “oh, you must really like Jason.” But if you look at the artists I study & copy, they’ve always carried their influences with openness & pride, particularly in their early books. Even in the last ACME there’s a terrific Gary Panterish sequence, however it doesn’t read like fanfiction, it’s still clearly Chris Ware. When an artist does an honest copy it will come out with a degree of difference and that difference makes all the difference.

you are a fucking lovely human being
I couldn’t agree more.

Were you perchance in Chicago recently? I could have swore I saw your visage walking around a couple weeks ago. I was not brave enough to ask, but if it were you, I will kick my own shins.
I’m afraid not, but I’d love to visit some day. And Quimby’s carry a couple of my mini-comics (I think). But since you’re in Chicago, I advise stalking Laura Park, Chris Ware & Ivan Brunetti, they’re far more brilliant than I can ever hope to be.

wow another new yorker drawing. i’ve stopped ripping them from the library issues. instead, i’ve taken to stealing them from the hospital waiting room copies. i hope that’s ok.

Sure, as long as the issue is not at the moment being read by a fellow patient. Also, what kind of hospital carries current issues. I thought it’s all tear-stained Golf Digests from the 90s.

You were asking about fashion blogs, have you tried hel-looks - it offers no criticism at all. I find others depressing after a while.
That was quite a while ago. There are neat things on hel-looks and other blogs, I just have no patience to go through all the hep youth, so I stick to tumblr.

Thank you!

Why don’t you want to watch the tintin movie?

3D, Spielberg, bumpy faces, CGI, motion-capture.

Anonymous asked you:
what are your favorite designers?
Actually, I don’t really know anyone except Paul Buckley who’s responsible for the Penguin’s excellent cartoonist-illustrated series. I should educate myself.
